Mat Based Massage & Bodywork

Mat based bodywork, massage performed on a mat on the floor, fully clothed, is one of the most powerful and efficient methods of bodywork in the world. It is also one of the most versatile in its approach, positioning and tools for addressing a myriad of issues and concerns.

There are movements and approaches to the body in mat based bodywork that simply cannot be done on a standard massage table, allowing for deeper and wider range of therapeutic treatments and longer lasting results.

Our style of mat based therapy is loosely based on traditional Thai massage techniques. In Thai massage practitioners use their hands, thumbs, forearms, knees, and feet to reduce tension in the muscles.

At times, when broader/deeper pressure is needed we may stand (with support) or sit on the affected area of the body. Don’t worry, we will always ask for consent before standing or sitting on you!

Traditional Thai is based on the belief that energy moves through your body along predictable lines known as sens. Thai massage uses stretches, movement, and pressure in accordance with this flow along the sens lines.

While we too utilize stretches, movement, and pressure, we do not follow the traditional flow formula or sens lines, instead we want to get right to the heart of the issues that brought you in to see us!

Prenatal Mat Massage

Using mat based bodywork for prenatal clients is so beneficial to expecting moms, and absolutely my favorite way of easing your aches and pains. Mat based work allows the mother to lay or sit comfortably with the use of bolsters, wedges, and pillows.

The techniques used are similar to normal mat based movement, stretching, and pressure but modified to account for the mothers changing body. Using this method we can address postural changes due to the growing baby, increase circulation, reduce fatigue, and many more benefits.

This style of bodywork really helps prep the mothers body for upcoming labor and delivery. Post delivery we can continue this method of treatment to help the body recover from giving birth. Babies are always welcome in the office for these treatments!

Injury Treatment

Mat based therapy for injury treatment can help reduce muscle spasms & tension, mobilizes the joints, and improves blood circulation to aid in easier and potentially quicker healing times.

Some injuries we treat with mat based work are shoulder/rotator cuff injuries, low back pain, plantar fasciitis, hip pain/mobility, TMJD and headaches/migraines.
